Macaroni

An estimation of macaroni!
Challenge
3 to 4
sd

Principle: Estimate how many macaroni pieces can fit in one cubic meter.

In this challenge, students will try to figure out how many macaroni pieces can fit into one cubic meter. The activity starts with a group estimation. Then, the students split into teams to discuss how they might solve the problem. Each team works through its calculations and notes the steps taken. You may provide extra materials — such as 1 cm³ cubes or a one-liter milk carton — to help them. At the end, each team shares its approach and results with the class, and a group discussion will follow to compare and reflect on the different outcomes.

Explanations and Materials

The use of the following materials may contribute to the success of the activity:

  • 30 cm ruler
  • 1-meter ruler
  • Small bag of macaroni (e.g., one sandwich bag per team)
  • Calculator (optional)
  • Additional materials, such as 1 cm³ cubes or a one-liter milk carton, may be provided to support estimation.
